I find it interesting how there haven't really been any outright panned mass market games anymore. Will Balan Wonderworld be the next Godhand? /s There are plenty of flawed quirky games that have shot up both in perception and value years after release and seeing so many people tank on it seems like it's ripe for a HOT TAKE in about 5 or 10 years. I'm curious if there's a chance it will land cult status as copies get bought up or destroyed, and time and nostalgia come into play?

Would have been more frustrated at full price but at under £20 I think its well worth the money.I'm sure a lot of people are familiar with the meme quality of Balan Wonderworld and how it's universally panned and underperformed. They're always a little flawed, a little frustrating, but can be real fun if you're able to overlook those flaws. I think if you've played a lot of Yuji Naka 3D games you kinda know what to expect. Overall I enjoyed this game far more than I expected given the very poor reviews everywhere. The creatures you breed in the hub world is very much like Chao from Sonic Adventure. You can definitely tell this is a Yuji Naka game, the art style particularly of Balan and the boss characters is very familiar if you've played NiGHTS into Dreams. There are some flaws, such as when you get hit you lose the costume you were wearing which can be a real pain if you have none left (you have to go back to the level you collected it on to get another, but you can collect multiple if you keep picking them repeatedly) but its certainly a different take on things. The mechanics of this game are a lot more interesting that the reviews made out. This game runs at a smooth 60fps on PS5 and the graphics, at least in the cut scenes (which are rendered in real-time) are quite impressive for a cross-gen title.
